Judges and commissioners decide family law cases. Commissioners oversee divorce cases. They hear evidence, rule on motions, and issue orders or recommendations. Commissioners decide who will get the children, what child support will be, and who will receive temporary alimony.

Judges, on the other hand, take a very limited role in family law cases. If your case goes to trial, it will be in front of a judge.

The Utah courts have provided a brief explanation of role of commissioners here.
